A native of Dublin he was ordained in 1961. He began his ministry in the neighbouring Parish of St. Bernadette’s on Clogher Road, also in Crumlin. He taught in the Vocational School and was chaplain to the students.

In 1963 he became chaplain to Loreto Convent in Dalkey and priest teacher in Dun Laoghaire Vocational School.  In the following year Father John became Diocesan Advisor for religious education in primary schools – a position he held for ten years.  During most of that period he was Parish Chaplain to St Audoen’s in High Street, 200 yards from the ancient Cathedral of Christchurch.

In 1974 he moved to work in the developing parish of Ballybrack in South Dublin, where he had responsibility for the provision of schools and the new Church of the Apostles which opened in 1982.  This was followed by a move to rural setting of Johnstown in the parish of Arklow before moving to the north of the Wicklow in December 1987 to minister in the parish of St Peter’s, Little Bray.

In 1992 Father John became Parish Priest of St Mark’s Parish in Springfield Tallaght before moving to Crumlin in 1999.

The title of Monsignor was bestowed on Fr. John by Pope Benedict XVI in December 2006.
