In 1974 he moved to work in the developing parish of Ballybrack in South Dublin, where he had responsibility for the provision of schools and the new Church of the Apostles which opened in 1982.  This was followed by a move to rural setting of Johnstown in the parish of Arklow before moving to the north of the Wicklow in December 1977 to minister in the parish of St Peter's, Little Bray.

In 1992 Father John became Parish Priest of St Mark's Parish in Springfield Tallaght before moving to Crumlin in 1999.

The title of Monsignor was bestowed on Fr. John by Pope Benedict XVI in January 2007
